If you’ve spent any time wandering the snow-dusted coniferous forests west of Mount Yotei on your playthrough, you’ve probably heard other players mutter about a rare, highly aggressive serpent that only appears under very specific conditions. The ghost of yotei snake is one of the most elusive optional enemies in the game, and most players either miss it entirely on their first run, or get one-shot the second they stumble across its spawn point. I spent almost three hours tracking it down on my first playthrough, and messed up the fight twice before I figured out the tricks to take it down easily. Where to Find the Ghost of Yotei Snake Exact Spawn Locations
First off, you can’t just show up to the right area and expect the snake to be waiting for you. It has very specific spawn requirements that the game never tells you directly, which is why 70% of players never encounter it naturally. You’ll need to have completed the “Frozen Path” side quest for the old hunter at the Frosted Pine Shrine first, otherwise the spawn trigger won’t activate at all, even if you’re in the right spot at the right time.
Once you’ve finished that quest, head to the small frozen pond roughly 3 minutes north of the Frosted Pine Shrine fast travel point. The snake only spawns between 2AM and 5AM in-game time, and only during light snowfall. It won’t appear during blizzards, clear weather, or rain, so if the conditions aren’t right, you can sit at the nearby campfire to skip time until you get the right weather window.
You need to turn off your lantern when you approach the pond, by the way. The snake has extremely sensitive light detection, and it will burrow back into the snow and despawn immediately if you get within 50 feet with your lantern on. The ghost of yotei snake is a level 42 enemy, so if you’re below level 38, you’re probably going to struggle unless you have fully upgraded frost resistance gear. It doesn’t have a huge health pool (only 12,000 HP, which is less than most mid-game bosses), but its attacks hit extremely hard, and most of them apply either poison or frost damage over time effects that can kill you even if you survive the initial hit.
There are three main attacks you need to watch for, and each has a clear tell you can spot before it lands. Its poison spray attack covers a 10-foot cone in front of its head, and it will lurch its neck back for two full seconds before releasing the spray. Dodge sideways instead of backward to avoid it completely, and you’ll have a small window to hit its exposed head for extra damage right after it finishes spraying.
Its burrow attack is the one that catches most new players off guard. It will dig into the snow and disappear, then pop up directly under your feet three seconds later to deal 60% of your max health in damage if it hits. You can track its position by the small moving snow mound it makes while underground, so just keep sprinting in a straight line until it pops up, then hit it with a heavy attack while it’s still disoriented from emerging. It also has a 360-degree tail sweep attack that knocks you back 15 feet, and it will rattle the tip of its tail twice before using it, so jump backward as soon as you hear the rattle.
Best Gear and Consumables to Bring to the Fight
You don’t need any endgame gear to beat this snake, but bringing the right items will make the fight 10x easier. I’ve tested a dozen different loadouts for this fight across 10 separate playthroughs, and this is the setup that works every single time, even for lower-level players:
- Frost resistance amulet +2: It cuts the snake’s frost damage over time effect by 70%, which is a lifesaver when you get grazed by its tail. You can buy one from the merchant at the Frosted Pine Shrine for 800 gold, or get one as a reward for the Frozen Path side quest.
- Poison cure poultices (minimum 5): The poison spray will drain 15% of your health per second for 4 seconds if you get hit, so keep these hotkeyed so you can use them immediately if you make a mistake.
- Long blade with fire enchantment: The snake takes 30% extra damage from fire attacks, so even a common iron sword with a temporary fire buff works far better than a high-level frost or poison weapon for this fight.
- Smoke bombs (2 maximum): If you get low on health, throw a smoke bomb to create distance and heal. The snake can’t track you through smoke for 8 seconds, which is more than enough time to pop a health potion and reset the fight.
You’re better off leaving your AI companions at camp for this fight, by the way. They tend to run around randomly, which triggers the snake’s burrow attack far more often than it would trigger if you’re alone. You also don’t want to wear heavy armor that slows your movement speed, because you need to be able to dodge quickly to avoid its attacks. Medium armor with 50% or higher frost resistance is the perfect balance of protection and mobility for this fight.
Rewards You Get for Defeating the Ghost of Yotei Snake
A lot of players skip this fight because they think it’s just a random optional enemy with no real rewards, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The loot you get from this snake is some of the most useful mid-game gear in the entire game, especially if you’re planning to explore the higher elevations of Mount Yotei later on.
First, it will always drop the Serpent’s Frost Core, which is a required crafting material for the Yotei Winter Cloak, the best frost resistance cloak in the game. The cloak lets you explore the highest peaks of Mount Yotei without taking constant frost damage, even during blizzards, which is required for the endgame “Summit” main quest. You can craft the cloak at any blacksmith once you have the core, plus 10 pieces of wolf fur and 5 iron ingots.
It also has a 30% chance to drop the unique Snake Fang Dagger, a stealth weapon that applies two stacks of poison on every hit, and deals 20% extra damage to enemies that haven’t detected you yet. It’s the best stealth weapon in the game for mid-level builds, and it can’t be found anywhere else. When you bring the Serpent’s Frost Core back to the old hunter at the Frosted Pine Shrine, he’ll also give you 5,000 gold, a free permanent fire enchantment for your primary weapon, and 30% extra gold from all NPC vendors in the northern region for seven in-game days.
