Guide to the Ghost of Yotei Undying Samurai: Lore, Fight Tips & Secrets

If you’ve wandered the frost-covered peaks of the Yotei region in your playthrough, you’ve almost certainly heard distant whispers of the ghost of yotei undying samurai before you ever see him. I first stumbled on this boss completely by accident while chasing a lost cat side quest, and got wiped three times in a row before I even realized what I was up against. Unlike most generic enemy encounters, this boss ties directly to one of the region’s most tragic local legends, and beating him unlocks not just rare loot, but a hidden cutscene that fills in a ton of unspoken lore about the area’s violent past. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, from his backstory to the exact moves you need to counter to take him down on your first try.

The Ghost of Yotei Undying Samurai: Tragic Origin Story

The boss is the restless spirit of Oda Kageyasu, a local samurai lord who refused to surrender when the shogun’s forces invaded the Yotei region 20 years prior to the game’s events. He fought off 100 soldiers alone before he was betrayed by his closest advisor, who poisoned his tea mid-battle to get a promotion from the invading shogunate. His last words were a vow to protect the region from all outside invaders, even after death. Local villagers say he still haunts the mountain passes because his body was never given a proper burial, so his spirit can’t move on to the afterlife.

I’ve talked to a lot of players who skip the side quests tied to his backstory, but doing those first gives you a huge buff before you fight him, so it’s well worth taking 20 minutes to complete them first. You’ll find the first of these quests at the small frozen shrine just west of the Yotei mountain fast travel point, given to you by an old woman who lost her son to the samurai’s confused rampages when she was a child. Completing all three small quests also lowers his maximum health by 15% when you start the boss fight, which is a bigger advantage than any high-tier weapon you can bring.

Core Attack Patterns You Need to Counter

The ghost of yotei undying samurai doesn’t have any unblockable attacks in the first two phases, so you can safely block most of his hits if you’re still learning his patterns. He has three distinct attack phases that trigger when he drops to 70% and 30% health respectively, so you’ll have time to adjust your strategy as the fight goes on. First phase he uses a long odachi, with slow but extremely heavy hits that can take out 60% of your health in one go if you’re wearing light armor. The biggest mistake most players make is rolling too early when he winds up for his heavy odachi swing – the wind up is long, but the hitbox stays active for almost two full seconds after the swing lands, so wait half a second after his sword starts moving before you dodge to the side.

Second phase he pulls out a short wakizashi and starts using faster, multi-hit combos that are hard to block completely. Parrying his light attacks is way easier than it looks here, and each successful parry builds up his stagger bar twice as fast as regular attacks do. Third phase he’s surrounded by a frost aura that slows you down by 40% if you get too close for too long, so you’ll want to keep a small distance between you and him unless you’re mid-attack combo. Don’t use fire weapons here, by the way – his frost aura extinguishes fire damage almost instantly, so you’re wasting your weapon’s special effect if you bring a fire-infused blade.

Recommended Loadout & Pre-Fight Prep

You don’t need endgame gear to beat this boss, but a few specific items will make the fight way less frustrating. I tested 12 different loadouts when I was grinding for his rare drop, and this is the setup that worked for me on all difficulty levels, even the hardest permadeath mode:

  • Lightning-infused uchigatana or odachi: Lightning damage cuts through his frost aura and stuns him for half a second on every third hit, which interrupts his longer combo chains before they can deal serious damage
  • 3x frost resistance poultices: These cut the slow effect from his third phase aura by 70%, so you can dodge normally even when you’re standing close to him to land a string of attacks
  • Ranged weapon with piercing rounds: You can shoot the glowing charm on his chest from 10 feet away to stagger him instantly once per fight, which is perfect for stopping his unblockable area-of-effect attack that triggers at 20% health
  • Stealth charm (optional): If you want to skip the first wave of ghostly minions that spawn when you enter his arena, equip this to sneak past them and start the fight with a stealth attack for 30% of his first health bar gone
  • This loadout cuts the average fight time against the ghost of yotei undying samurai by almost 40% compared to using a default uninfused weapon. If you don’t have a lightning-infused weapon already, you can find a temporary one in a chest right next to the arena entrance, so you don’t have to go back to a blacksmith to craft one. Just make sure you repair it before you start the fight, because its durability is already half gone when you pick it up.

Hidden Rewards You Unlock For Beating Him

Most players only know about the rare odachi drop you get for beating him, but there are three other hidden rewards most people miss. The rare odachi he drops has a unique passive that lets you deal 15% extra damage to all ghost-type enemies for the rest of the game, which is extremely useful for the late-game ghost-ridden regions of northern Hokkaido. First, you unlock a secret side quest where you can bury his remains at the top of Yotei mountain, which gives you a permanent 10% frost resistance buff for the rest of your playthrough. You also get a unique emote that lets you perform his signature samurai bow, which is a rare cosmetic that can’t be unlocked anywhere else in the game.

I’ve seen a lot of players leave the arena immediately after beating the ghost of yotei undying samurai, which means they miss out on all these extra rewards. If you go back to the old woman who gave you the origin side quest after you beat him, she’ll also give you a hidden treasure map that leads to a cache of 5000 gold and a legendary healing charm that restores 20% of your health automatically when you drop below 10% health. I didn’t find this reward until my third playthrough, so make sure you don’t forget to go back and talk to her after the fight. If you take a photo of his grave after you bury him, you can unlock a special character profile entry that fills in the last remaining details of his backstory, including the name of the advisor who betrayed him and where that advisor’s own grave is located for a fun revenge side quest.

The ghost of yotei undying samurai is one of the few bosses in the game that feels equally rewarding to learn about from a lore perspective and to beat from a gameplay perspective. Don’t get discouraged if you get wiped a few times on your first try – his attack patterns are predictable once you spend a few minutes learning them, and the rewards are well worth the extra effort. If you have a favorite trick for beating him that I didn’t mention here, feel free to drop it in the comments below for other players to try out.
