Guide to Jigoku Fortress in Ghost of Yotei: Tips, Secrets & Combat Tricks

If you’ve spent any time roaming the snowy, war-torn peaks of Ghost of Yotei, you’ve almost certainly spotted the foreboding stone spires of Jigoku Fortress peeking over the northern mountain ridge. I spent three full playthroughs bashing my head against its gates before I figured out the tricks to get past its traps, enemy patrols, and brutal final boss without burning through all my healing items. This guide pulls from all those failed runs to give you every tip you need to clear it smoothly, no cheap exploits required. You don’t need max level gear to beat it either, as long as you plan ahead and follow the paths that avoid unnecessary fights.

How to Access Jigoku Fortress in Ghost of Yotei Without Triggering Early Alerts

The biggest mistake most new players make is marching straight through the front iron gates, which triggers an immediate alert for all 20+ guards patrolling the outer courtyard. You’ll get swarmed in seconds, even if you’re 10 levels above the recommended range for the area. Instead, follow the frozen stream that runs west of the fortress until you hit a broken section of the outer stone wall half covered in ice. You don’t need to complete any side quests to unlock access to the fortress, even if the map marks it as a high-level restricted area early on.

Climb the ice patches on the broken wall to get to the upper outer walkway, where only one lone archer is posted. Take him out quietly with a headshot or stealth takedown, and you’ll be inside the fortress grounds without alerting anyone. If you’re under level 25, you’ll still struggle with the mid-tier enemies inside, so it’s worth doing a few nearby bandit camps first to level up your sword parry and stamina stats. You can also pick up a few extra fire arrows from the camp just south of the stream to use later in the boss fight.

Key Traps and Enemy Patrols to Avoid Inside the Fortress Grounds

Once you get past the outer wall, the inner courtyard and keep are packed with hidden traps that will end your run faster than any enemy attack if you’re not paying attention. I used to rush through the courtyard to get to the boss fight faster, and I’d trigger at least two traps every single time. Slow down, scan your surroundings every few steps, and you’ll save way more healing items for the final fight. The most common traps you’ll run into are:

  • Snow-covered spike pits: Look for faint gray discoloration in the bright white snow to spot these before you step; falling in deals 70% of your max health in damage, even with heavy armor equipped.
  • Alarm gong tripwires: These are strung between wooden posts near all entry points to the main keep; cutting them with your dagger first prevents alerting all 12 guards on the courtyard level at once.
  • Flame thrower nozzles built into the keep walls: These activate every 8 seconds when you’re climbing the outer wall to the upper floors; wait for a burst to end before you move up another handhold to avoid being knocked off the edge.

The patrols inside the courtyard follow a strict 90-second loop, so you can hide behind the wooden storage crates near the well to take out guards one by one without being seen. I prefer to take out the two spear wielders first, since their long reach makes them harder to fight in close quarters if you get cornered. You can also shoot the loose support beams holding up the wooden watchtower in the corner of the courtyard to take out the three archers posted there at once, if you aim carefully.

How to Beat the Jigoku Fortress Final Boss With Minimal Healing

The final boss of the fortress is General Kaito, a heavily armored samurai with a massive odachi sword that deals huge damage even if you block his attacks. The fight has two phases, and most players burn through all their healing items in the first phase before they even see his harder second phase moves. His unblockable red glint charge attack is the only move that can one-shot you if you’re wearing light armor, so don’t try to parry it – dodge to the side right as he swings, since the hitbox is wider than most players expect.

He has a weak point on the back of his neck, so if you can circle around him after he does his three-swipe combo, you can land a critical hit that takes off 15% of his health instantly. I found that using fire resin on your sword before the fight cuts his defense by 20% for the first 30 seconds, which lets you get a huge chunk of his health down before he even gets to his second phase. You don’t have to fight the four guards that are in the boss room with him at first, either – you can shoot the ropes holding up the chandelier above them to take all four out instantly, if you aim carefully before you step into the center of the room to trigger the fight. In his second phase, he starts throwing explosive shuriken between sword swipes, so keep a small distance between you and him until he finishes his throw animation before you move in to attack.

Hidden Loot You Don’t Want to Miss in Jigoku Fortress

A lot of players rush out right after beating the boss to get back to the main story, but there’s a ton of rare, endgame-tier gear hidden around the fortress that makes the extra exploration well worth it. The rare Frost Katana in the hidden basement vault deals 25% extra damage to ice-type enemies, which is perfect for the later northern zones of the game where most enemies have ice resistance to regular attacks. To get the vault key, you have to search the locked desk in General Kaito’s private quarters on the third floor, behind the folding wooden screen next to his bed.

There’s also a small shrine hidden behind the frozen waterfall at the back of the fortress, where you can pray to get a permanent +10% boost to your stamina, which is one of the most useful permanent buffs in the entire game. I missed this on my first two runs, and I kicked myself when I realized how much easier that stamina buff makes all the later boss fights and mountain climbing sections. If you prefer a tank playstyle over fast, stealthy builds, you can also find a full set of heavy Oni Armor in the attic of the main keep, which reduces all incoming damage by 18% and makes you immune to the stun effect from heavy attacks. You’ll have to fight one lone elite guard to get it, but it’s well worth the extra two minutes of combat.

If you take your time, use the stealth paths, and watch for the traps we covered, clearing Jigoku Fortress in Ghost of Yotei doesn’t have to be the hair-pulling experience it is for most first-time players. Don’t rush through the area to get to the boss, either – the hidden loot and permanent buffs are well worth the extra 15 minutes you’ll spend exploring every corner.
