Guide to Nine Tail Armor Ghost of Yotei: Locations, Loot & Battle Tips

I still remember the first time I stumbled on the Nine Tail Armor Ghost of Yotei completely by accident. I was hunting for wild mushrooms to craft a healing buff, wandering off the main path in the northern cedar grove, when a giant fox-shaped armored ghost burst out of the mist and one-shot me before I could even draw my sword. I spent the next two hours testing different strategies, dying at least 12 times, before I finally figured out how to take it down without burning through all my rare resources. This guide breaks down everything I learned, from spawn requirements to loot drops, so you don’t have to waste half your afternoon dying over and over like I did.

Where to Find the Nine Tail Armor Ghost of Yotei and Trigger Its Spawn

The boss is located in the unmarked misty cedar grove directly north of the frozen waterfall fast travel point, and you won’t get a map marker for it until you get within 50 feet of its spawn shrine. You’ll know you’re heading the right way when the mist gets thicker, and you start seeing small fox statues lined up along the narrow dirt path leading deeper into the woods. The path ends at an abandoned stone shrine surrounded by nine larger fox carvings, all weathered and covered in moss.

You can only trigger the spawn if you’ve completed the “Fox Spirit Blessing” side quest first, which you pick up from the old elder in the nearby mountain village. If you haven’t finished that quest, the shrine won’t give you an interaction prompt, no matter what time of day you visit. To spawn the boss, interact with the shrine at exactly midnight in-game time, and select the option to leave a sake offering. You can buy cheap sake from the village merchant for 50 coins each, so bring a few extra in case you die and need to respawn it.

If you leave the grove during the fight, the boss will despawn immediately, and you’ll have to wait 24 in-game hours before you can offer another sake to summon it again. I made this mistake once when I ran out of healing pots halfway through the fight, and I had to sit around waiting for the in-game day to pass before I could try again, so make sure you’re fully prepared before you trigger the spawn.

Key Weaknesses and Attack Patterns to Watch For

The Nine Tail Armor Ghost of Yotei is fast, hits hard, and has a wide range of attacks that can catch new players off guard, but it has very clear tells for every move if you pay attention. Never stand directly in front of the boss for more than 2 seconds at a time, because it will almost always follow up with a close-range sweep that’s nearly impossible to dodge if you’re too close. Most of its attacks are centered on its tails and fox fire, so once you learn what to look for, you can avoid 90% of the damage it deals.

Its biggest weakness is the small gap between its chest plate and neck armor, which counts as a critical hit spot 100% of the time. Landing a hit there deals 2.5x your normal damage, so you should aim for that spot every chance you get. It also takes 3x damage from fire sealing talismans, which will stun it for 3 seconds every time you hit it with one, giving you plenty of time to land a few critical hits. It’s completely immune to ice and poison attacks, so don’t waste any of those consumables on it, they won’t do a single point of damage.

These are its three deadliest attacks you need to watch out for:

  • Triple tail sweep: covers a 180-degree arc in front of it, deals 70% of your max health if you don’t block perfectly, and has a tell where it tucks all nine tails to one side before swinging
  • Fox fire volley: fires 6 homing fire projectiles that track you for 3 seconds, dodge behind a large tree to break the lock, as the projectiles can’t pass through solid objects
  • Armor charge: it lowers its head and runs straight at you at high speed, if it connects it stuns you for 2 seconds followed by a tail stab that usually kills low to mid level players instantly

I tried to tank the triple tail sweep once with a max level wooden shield, and it shattered the shield completely and still took half my health, so it’s always better to dodge these attacks rather than try to block them. If you see it rear back its head and roar, that means it’s about to use the fox fire volley, so start running for cover immediately.

Recommended Loadout to Beat the Boss Easily

You don’t need endgame gear to beat the Nine Tail Armor Ghost of Yotei, but picking the right loadout will cut your fight time in half and make it way less frustrating. Use a dual blade or fast katana, not a heavy odachi or club, because the boss moves so quickly that slow weapons will miss 80% of the time, and you won’t get enough chances to land heavy hits. A +3 katana or dual blade is more than enough to take it down in 5 to 7 minutes if you hit the critical spot consistently.

For armor, wear light or medium armor with at least 25% fire resistance, and avoid heavy armor entirely. The extra defense from heavy armor isn’t worth the speed penalty, because you need to be able to dodge quickly to avoid its attacks. If you don’t have fire resistant armor, you can eat a fire resistance mushroom before the fight to get a 20% buff for 10 minutes, which is enough to last the entire fight.

Make sure you bring these items with you before you start the fight: 8 to 10 fire sealing talismans, 10 medium healing pots, 3 stamina boosters, and 1 temporary attack buff if you have one. If you don’t have fire sealing talismans, you can craft them right in the grove using 3 pine resin and 1 piece of paper, both of which you can find scattered along the path leading to the shrine. Stamina boosters are really useful because you’ll be dodging constantly, and running out of stamina right when the boss charges at you is a surefire way to die.

If you have the fox spirit companion unlocked, bring it with you, it will distract the boss for 10 second intervals every few minutes, giving you plenty of time to land critical hits or heal up. Don’t bring any NPC companions with you though, the boss will target them first, and if they die, you’ll lose the side quest reward associated with them, which isn’t worth the extra help.

Loot and Rewards You Get for Defeating the Boss

The rewards for beating the Nine Tail Armor Ghost of Yotei are easily some of the best mid-game loot in the entire game, so it’s well worth the effort to learn how to beat it. The guaranteed drop every time you beat it is the full Nine Tail Armor set, which is a medium armor set that looks really cool and has amazing stats. The Nine Tail Armor set gives 40% fire resistance and a 15% damage boost to all fast attacks, which makes it perfect for both exploring the volcanic southern region later in the game and fighting fast, agile enemies.

You also get the reusable Fox Fire Talisman every time you beat it, which lets you cast a powerful area of effect fire attack once every 5 minutes, great for taking out groups of weak enemies quickly. There’s a 30% chance it will drop the Nine Tail Katana, a rare weapon that has a 20% chance to inflict burning on every hit, which deals damage over time to enemies for 5 seconds. I farmed this boss 7 times to get the katana, and it’s been my main weapon ever since, it works especially well on the ice demon bosses in the mountain regions.

If you beat the boss without taking any damage at all, you’ll get a special fox mask cosmetic that you can’t get anywhere else in the game. The mask doesn’t just look good either, it has a hidden buff that makes all wild foxes friendly to you, so they won’t run away when you approach, and will sometimes bring you small gifts like rare berries or crafting materials. I only got the no-damage run on my 15th try, but the mask is one of my favorite cosmetic items in the game, so it was worth the effort.

You can farm this boss as many times as you want, as long as you wait 24 in-game hours between each spawn. I usually farm it once every in-game week to get extra Nine Tail Armor sets to sell for extra coins, and to try to get extra Nine Tail Katanas to give to my friends who play co-op with me.

The Nine Tail Armor Ghost of Yotei is easily one of my favorite optional bosses in the entire game, both for the fun fight and the amazing rewards you get for beating it. Don't get frustrated if you die a few times when you first try it, the attack patterns are easy to memorize once you pay attention to its tells, and the loot is more than worth the effort. If you've found any weird tricks to beat this boss faster, feel free to share them in the comments, I'm always looking for new ways to farm it for extra Nine Tail Katana drops.
